Exciting news for fans of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, as the prequel to the beloved story, “Wonka,” finally got its first trailer during this year’s Cinemacon event. The Timothee Chalamet-led film has been in development since 2016, with Chalamet being cast as the titular character in 2021. However, unlike the previous film adaptation starring Gene Wilder, “Wonka” is based on the original 1964 book by Roald Dahl.
A Glimpse into the World of Wonka
The trailer showcased Wonka traveling the world to perfect his craft and laying the foundations for his chocolate-making empire in his room. Viewers were treated to a glimpse of Wonka’s numerous experiments, including making people float. The trailer culminated in the opening of Wonka’s first chocolate shop, with Chalamet declaring, “Mark my words, this is going to be the greatest chocolate shop the world has ever seen.”
The design of the film’s Oompa Loompas, played by Hugh Grant, stayed true to the original movie’s look, with orange skin and green hair. Chalamet expressed his excitement about playing the role, stating, “This is a Willy that’s full of joy and optimism, and I hope he’ll become the greatest chocolate maker of all time.”
A Star-Studded Cast
“Wonka” boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, and Jim Carter. Paterson Joseph, known for his role in “The Leftovers,” plays a young Arthur Slugworth.
Directed and co-written by Paul King, “Wonka” is set to premiere on December 15, exclusively in theaters. Fans of the original story can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved tale, with Chalamet’s portrayal of a young Willy Wonka promising to add a new layer of excitement and wonder to the world of chocolate-making.
