The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become a massive success at the global box office, surpassing even creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s expectations. In an interview with Japanese press, Miyamoto expressed his surprise at the film’s success, stating that while he had high expectations, the movie exceeded them. Despite relatively low review scores from some professional critics, Miyamoto believes that this actually helped generate additional buzz for the film.

A Different Script for Japan

Miyamoto also clarified that a different script was created specifically for the Japanese version of the film, which is set to open on April 28. The decision to create a unique Japanese script was made from the beginning to ensure that the subtle nuances of the story were not lost in translation.

Despite receiving just a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 46 on GameSpot sister site Metacritic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has received high ratings from audiences on both sites, as well as a coveted A rating on CinemaScore. The film has already grossed $875 million worldwide and is expected to reach $1 billion before it finishes its run in theaters. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time and is currently the biggest movie of 2023.
