Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has released a new gameplay trailer as part of the Warhammer Skulls Showcase. The trailer showcases the waves of Tyranids that players will face in the surprise sequel. Players get a glimpse of both the shooting and stabbing combat mechanics as the superhuman hero hacks through enemies using the mechanical teeth of his chainsword. The gameplay trailer is reminiscent of the ultraviolent battles, washed-out colours, and big chunky characters that were popular in the X360/PS3 era of action games. The trailer showcases the bloody excess of the Gears and Gods Of War mixed with Dynasty Warriors’ endless sea of enemies.

The team at Saber Interactive developed Space Marine 2 and used the same engine as their World War Z co-op shooter. The game engine shows an impressive number of zombies on-screen at any given moment, climbing on top of one another, raining down from the ceilings, and scrambling toward players from every direction. The game engine is put to good use in Space Marine 2’s recent trailer, especially with the flood of aliens near the end.

The original Space Marine and expectations for the sequel

The first Space Marine game was released during the same era as the X360/PS3 action games that the new gameplay trailer is reminiscent of. The original game was well-received, and Alec Meer (RPS in peace) wrote in his Space Marine review that “It’s immensely satisfying to hammer and Lascannon your way through a small army, then proudly pan an absurdly blood-splattered Titus around the now-empty room it all happened in.”

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 promises to offer a fun action game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Although there is no release date yet, the game will be available on PC via Steam when it’s ready.

Overall, the new gameplay trailer for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 showcases the impressive game engine and the ultraviolent battles that the franchise is known for. The flood of aliens near the end of the trailer is particularly impressive and shows off the potential for epic battles in the game. Fans of the original game and newcomers to the series can look forward to a fun action game that promises to deliver on the franchise’s legacy.
