In a recent interview with Deadline, Quentin Tarantino discussed his missed opportunity to direct a James Bond movie, specifically a Casino Royale film. In the interview, Tarantino said that he was told by Eon, the company that owns the rights to James Bond movies, that they did not have the rights to Casino Royale specifically. This meant that the 1967 spy parody movie Casino Royale movie starring Woody Allen and Peter Sellers was able to exist outside the main series. Tarantino and his team reached out to James Bond author Ian Fleming’s people and inquired about making a Casino Royale film after 1994’s Pulp Fiction. The movie would have taken place in the ’60s and wasn’t about a series of Bond movies. Tarantino said they would have cast an actor and been one and done. Unfortunately, 007 producer Barbara Broccoli was preparing for someone to try this and locked down a deal for all of Fleming’s works, the filmmaker said.

Tarantino’s Thoughts on the James Bond Movie Series

Tarantino believes that the James Bond movie series should adapt one of the Ian Fleming James Bond books instead of coming up with brand-new stories. He said the books have “really classic adventures,” and doing them the way they were written would be a great way to make brand-new movies that are true to the original source material. However, issues with sexism and racism, among other things, have led to changes being made in more recent editions of Fleming’s novels.

Future of the James Bond Movie Series

The next James Bond movie will be a “reinvention” of the character, according to producer Barbara Broccoli. It could take some time to find the right person to play Bond, as whoever gets the role will need to sign on for numerous films over a decade. “The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off,” she said. “And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-, 12-year commitment. So he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing?’ Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].”

Tarantino’s idea for a Casino Royale movie may have been a missed opportunity, but it’s clear that the James Bond movie series still has a lot of potential for the future. Whether the filmmakers decide to adapt one of Fleming’s novels or come up with a brand-new story, the next Bond movie will undoubtedly be one of the most highly anticipated movies in recent memory.
