Overwatch 2’s game director, Aaron Keller, has written a blog post detailing the cancellation of the game’s PvE (Player Versus Environment) Hero Missions mode. This news disappointed the community, as it was considered the main attraction of the sequel. The mode offered a cooperative experience that allowed players to play through rounds with a team, upgrading their characters along the way.

Reasons for Cancellation

Keller explained that the decision to cancel PvE Hero Missions mode was made to focus on the development of the main game due to its growing scope and ambition. The team had struggled to find their footing with the mode early on, and as they tried to do too many things at once, they lost focus. The team had a grand vision, but they were never able to bring together all of the elements needed to ship a polished, cohesive experience. After years of work and emotional investment, the team had to pull the plug and turn their attention to refining plans for future game seasons.

Keller believes that the team set themselves up with high expectations but was unable to corral all their ideas into a deliverable experience. He apologized to the players and the team for the disappointment caused by the cancellation of this mode.

Future Content and Plans

Despite the cancellation of PvE Hero Missions mode, Keller promised that the Overwatch 2 team would continue to prioritize the game and its community. He assured fans that there would be plenty of new content coming their way. The game will still debut Story Missions, which will feature linear narratives about the heroes of Overwatch, delving deep into their backgrounds and motivations. This will be the sole PvE offering in the game.

Keller also mentioned that the team was working on improving the already existing PvP (Player Versus Player) mode. The team was trying to create a more dynamic and fluid experience for players. They were also exploring new ways to allow players to customize their characters and make them unique.
