Brace Yourself Games, the Canadian indie developer responsible for the popular rhythmic hit game Cadence of Hyrule, has announced layoffs in a statement made to PC Gamer. The company confirmed the “incredibly difficult decision” and stated that it would be providing severance packages and support services to assist those impacted by the layoffs.
The statement released by Brace Yourself Games read, “Yesterday, senior management at Brace Yourself Games made the incredibly difficult decision to lay off a portion of the company’s staff. This decision was not made lightly, as we deeply value our talented and dedicated employees.”
New Game Development Continues Despite Layoffs
Brace Yourself Games has revealed that work on the new game, Rift of the NecroDancer, and the Crypt of the NecroDancer: Synchrony DLC, along with certain other projects, will continue despite the layoffs. However, some other “unannounced” games have reportedly been “shelved”.
Former Senior Producer Confirms Half of Workforce Cut
According to Game Developer, former Brace Yourself Games senior producer, Crystal Savin, has confirmed that around half of the developer’s workforce has been cut. In a statement on social media, Savin wrote, “With a (very) heavy heart, I am announcing that I was recently impacted by a 50% cut in workforce at my studio after only being at the company for 4 months.”
Outlook for Remaining Employees
The Brace Yourself Games LinkedIn page states that there were 43 people working at the Vancouver studio, meaning there could now potentially be just over 20 people remaining based on the information provided. Other employees have also posted about their departure in recent times. Despite this, the company has stated that it is working to address the impact on the remaining team members and to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of its players.
