When it comes to the upcoming game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, MachineGames is taking a different approach than some might expect. While the studio has previously been praised for its work on first-person shooter games, they are not making gunplay the central mechanic of this new project. Creative director Axel Torvenius made it clear in an interview with Edge magazine that guns are considered a “fallback solution” rather than the primary focus of the gameplay.

In line with the character of Indiana Jones himself, the team is placing a greater emphasis on using intelligence and creative problem-solving skills rather than relying solely on firearms. Torvenius pointed out that Indy is not the type of character to engage in endless shootouts or overcome challenges through sheer firepower. Instead, he often relies on his intellect and resourcefulness to outwit his adversaries or navigate dangerous situations.

It’s important to the developers that the game remains true to the essence of Indiana Jones as a character. They recognize that he is not a superhero with extraordinary abilities, but rather a teacher and archaeologist who finds himself in perilous situations due to his passion for exploration. By highlighting the vulnerability and limitations of the protagonist, the team hopes to convey the sense of danger and risk that comes with each encounter.

Creating a game that features firearms but does not mandate their constant use presents a unique challenge. Game director Jerk Gustafsson explained that the team has implemented various options that allow players to approach combat in different ways. While guns are available in the game, players can opt for non-lethal methods to avoid drawing unwanted attention. The team has also incorporated the ability to repurpose firearms as melee weapons, offering a versatile and strategic approach to engagements.

MachineGames is reimagining the role of gunplay in the upcoming title Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. By focusing on exploration, puzzle-solving, and strategic decision-making, the developers are striving to deliver a gameplay experience that is true to the character and the spirit of the iconic franchise. This shift away from traditional gun-centric mechanics reflects a commitment to innovation and creativity in game design. With their unique approach, MachineGames is poised to offer players a fresh and engaging take on the beloved adventurer’s escapades.
