Warner Bros. Discovery made a casual announcement earlier this year, revealing that Mortal Kombat 12 was set to release this year with “ambitious launch projections.” Since then, developer Netherrealm has been dropping small teasers that suggest a possible series reboot or timeline cleanse. While the next instalment may not even be named MK12, fans are eagerly anticipating its release.
A recent teaser released by Netherrealm has set fan theories alight. The teaser features a red clock hand that starts at the number 9, which is conveniently the number that MK9’s sort-of rebooted timeline began with. From there, the hand ticks past (MK)10 and (MK)11 before stuttering and then completely springing past (MK)12 to land on 1. Mortal Kombat’s history with time travel has fans speculating that the next instalment may involve going back to the past and reshaping the timeline using Kronika’s hourglass.
According to reliable leaker Billbil-Kun, the next entry in the series could be called Mortal Kombat 1, following in the footsteps of confusingly named games like Battlefield 1 and Xbox One. While an official announcement has yet to be made, fans are already buzzing with excitement for the next Mortal Kombat game.
2023 is shaping up to be a great year for fighting games. Street Fighter 6 is set to release next month, and Tekken 8 could arrive within the year as well. With the potential for a Mortal Kombat reboot or timeline cleanse, fans of the series are eagerly awaiting news of the next instalment.
