Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks have joined forces to install fast electric vehicle chargers at 100 coffee shop locations along Interstate 5. This initiative is part of Mercedes’ $1 billion plan to establish 2,000 new EV charging hubs globally. The partnership aims to identify additional opportunities in key markets, including urban areas, charging deserts, and crucial travel corridors.

While Starbucks provides the space for the charging stalls and equipment in its parking lots, Mercedes-Benz is not covering the entire $1 billion project cost. MN8 Energy, a solar power and energy storage company under Goldman Sachs Asset Management, will bear 50% of the expenses. One of the primary hurdles in setting up new charging stations is finding a real estate partner willing to accommodate the necessary equipment for DC fast charging.

Charging an electric vehicle requires more time compared to refueling a gas car. With charging times potentially exceeding an hour, Mercedes-Benz recognizes the preference of EV owners to spend their time at a coffee shop rather than waiting in their vehicles. This approach acknowledges the need for a comfortable and convenient charging experience for consumers.

Mercedes-Benz’s collaboration with Starbucks is not an isolated case in the automotive industry. Volkswagen, through its subsidiary Electrify America, places EV chargers in prominent retail store parking lots such as Walmart and Target. Similarly, Tesla envisioned a large Supercharger station in Santa Monica with various amenities, although it has yet to materialize as of 2024.

Expanding Partnerships in the EV Market

Starbucks has also partnered with Volvo to develop 15 charging stations between Seattle and Denver, demonstrating the growing trend of collaboration between automakers and popular brands to enhance the EV charging infrastructure. This strategic alignment leverages the existing foot traffic at retail establishments like coffee shops to provide EV owners with convenient charging options during their travels.

The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks represents a significant step towards improving the accessibility and convenience of EV charging infrastructure. By leveraging popular coffee shop locations along Interstate 5, both companies aim to address the evolving needs of the growing electric vehicle market.
