Swen Vincke, CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, found himself in a challenging position when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. With development well underway at the company’s studio in St. Petersburg, Vincke was faced with a crucial decision – the safety of his team. Speaking to Edge, Vincke revealed that he was “fighting with embassies and consulates” to relocate developers after the war started.

Vincke had already contemplated the possibility of the invasion and had a plan in place for such a scenario. The closure of the St. Petersburg studio was an instant decision for him. He understood that simply shutting down the studio was not enough, as the safety of his team was paramount. More than 90% of the staff at the studio were quickly relocated to prevent any potential draft that could force them into war.

Game Development Implications

The decision to relocate the team was not only motivated by safety concerns but also by the need to ensure the completion of Baldur’s Gate 3. Vincke emphasized the intricate nature of RPG development, stating that any disruption in the team could lead to the collapse of the entire project. Missing team members could result in crucial tasks not being completed, ultimately impacting the final product.

Despite the necessary action taken to relocate the team, the closure of the studio had a significant impact on the development of the game. Vincke described the aftermath as “really, really hard,” with a ripple effect lasting nearly 18 months. This prolonged effect led to compromises and cuts in the final product, highlighting the challenges faced by the team due to the studio closure.

Swen Vincke’s swift decision to close the St. Petersburg studio and relocate his team amidst the Russian invasion not only prioritized the safety of his developers but also aimed to safeguard the completion of Baldur’s Gate 3. The sacrifices made by the team and the compromises endured during this challenging period underscore the dedication and resilience displayed by the Larian Studios team in the face of adversity.
