The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new and innovative solutions being introduced to enhance our daily lives. One such innovation comes from a start-up in China, known as Ling Long, who has developed a portable PC unlike anything we’ve seen before. Rather than the traditional laptop design, Ling Long has opted for a different approach by removing the display altogether and incorporating a hinge in the keyboard. This unconventional design allows the entire PC to be folded and easily carried, making it incredibly portable and convenient for users on the go.
The portable PC by Ling Long consists of two frames connected via a hinge. The left piece houses a 60 Wh battery, while the right piece contains a small motherboard with impressive specifications. Powered by a Ryzen 7 8840U processor, soldered DDR5 RAM, an NVMe M.2 2230 socket, and a range of USB ports, this compact device packs a punch in terms of performance. The AMD APU within this PC is similar to the chip found in the Asus ROG Ally, featuring eight cores, 16 threads, a 5.1 GHz boost clock, and a 30 W TDP. Additionally, graphics are handled by the integrated Radeon 780M with 768 RDNA 3 shaders, making it capable of handling 1080p gaming on low settings.
While one might assume that this portable PC is designed for gamers, Ling Long’s primary target audience seems to be office workers who are constantly on the move and prefer not to carry a traditional laptop. This innovative device relies on the availability of a suitable monitor and mouse, as it lacks a built-in display and only features a tiny trackpad. The absence of an HDMI port means that users will need a USB adapter or cable to connect to external displays. However, these sacrifices are necessary to achieve a compact size of 15 x 10 cm and a weight of only 800 g when folded.
Despite its small size, the Ling Long portable PC boasts impressive specifications, with models offering either 16 or 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and 512 GB or 1 TB of PCIe 4.0 storage. These specifications are more than sufficient for office-related tasks, making it a viable option for professionals on the move. One of the most attractive aspects of this device is its affordability, with prices starting at CNY 2,999 (approximately $413) for the base model. This makes it significantly cheaper than competitors like the Asus ROG Ally while still offering respectable performance and functionality.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Ling Long intends to offer its portable PC outside of China. While the device has garnered attention for its unique design and competitive pricing, its success in international markets is yet to be determined. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that some retailers may be willing to take a chance on this unconventional yet promising product. With its focus on portability, performance, and affordability, Ling Long’s portable PC has the potential to carve out a niche in the competitive world of tech gadgets.
