Legendary had previously announced that they had acquired the rights to adapt Capcom’s popular fighting game series, Street Fighter, for both the big and small screens. The film was set to be directed by the Philippou brothers, known for their work on Talk To Me. However, recent developments have revealed that the Philippous are no longer attached to the project. This decision came about due to Legendary and Capcom’s desire to expedite the production process, a timeline that the brothers were not prepared to meet.

Their Next Project with A24

The Philippou brothers already have another project lined up at A24, titled Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt in the lead roles. With production for this film set to begin soon, it seems that their commitment to Bring Her Back clashed with the accelerated schedule that Legendary and Capcom had in mind for the Street Fighter adaptation. As a result, the brothers had to step away from the project, leaving the director’s seat vacant.

While it remains unclear how far along the script was for the Street Fighter film, Legendary is actively searching for a replacement director to take the helm. With the rich history of the video game franchise, spanning back to its debut in 1987 with the original Street Fighter, there is certainly a lot of potential for a successful adaptation. The Street Fighter series gained immense popularity with the release of Street Fighter II in 1991, becoming a global phenomenon in arcades and later on home consoles.

Over the years, numerous sequels and spin-off games have been produced, each contributing to the enduring legacy of the Street Fighter franchise. The most recent installment, Street Fighter 6, continues to captivate fans with its engaging gameplay and iconic characters. In the realm of film, there have been two American live-action adaptations of Street Fighter. The first movie, released in 1994, featured stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ming-Na Wen, while the 2009 reboot, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, struggled to find success at the box office despite the presence of actress Kristin Kreuk in the lead role.
