The recent unveiling of Dragon Age: The Veilguard at this year’s Summer Game Fest left many fans surprised by the game’s departure from the traditional open-world format. Instead, the game seems to be drawing inspiration from its sci-fi cousin, Mass Effect, with features like ability wheels and three-character squads. However, according to director Corinne Busche, the RPG progression in Veilguard is a departure from that of Mass Effect.

In an interview with RPG Site, Corinne Busche highlighted the depth of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s progression system, contrasting it with the more action-oriented approach of Mass Effect. Unlike the focus on combat in Mass Effect, Dragon Age: The Veilguard places a significant emphasis on RPG elements, offering players a more intricate and nuanced experience. Busche described the game’s progression as “incredibly deep,” drawing comparisons to classic RPGs like Final Fantasy 10 and 12.

Surprisingly, Busche revealed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard took inspiration from the Sphere Grid of Final Fantasy 10 and the License Board of Final Fantasy 12. These influences can be seen in the game’s sprawling skill trees, which resemble intricate webs that players can navigate to tailor their characters to specific playstyles. Each class features a unique skill tree that allows players to specialize in different areas, with the option to choose from three specializations. Additionally, the regular skill trees are divided into three sections, giving players the freedom to focus on specific builds.

One of the defining aspects of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s progression system is the emphasis on player choice. By offering a wide range of skills and specializations, the game allows players to customize their characters in a way that suits their individual preferences. The branching paths of the skill trees provide players with flexibility and freedom, encouraging experimentation and creativity in character development.

With its unique approach to RPG progression, Dragon Age: The Veilguard represents a bold new direction for the beloved franchise. By drawing inspiration from classic RPGs and putting a greater focus on player choice and customization, the game promises to deliver a rich and engaging gameplay experience for fans of the series. As players embark on their journey through the world of Veilguard, they will have the opportunity to craft their own unique stories and shape the destiny of their characters in ways that were previously unseen in the Dragon Age universe.
