In a recent interview with Tom’s Hardware, AMD’s Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors, Donny Woligroski, discussed the company’s plans for future CPUs with 3D V-cache technology. The Ryzen 7000 X3D chips with 3D V-cache are currently considered the fastest gaming CPUs on the market, but AMD is already looking ahead to the Ryzen 9000 series, which will be based on the Zen 5 architecture.

Woligroski confirmed that even with the advancements in Zen 5 technology, the Ryzen 9000 series will not surpass the gaming performance of the Ryzen 7000 X3D chips. This may come as a surprise to some, considering the 16% increase in IPC promised by the new Zen 5 architecture. However, the addition of extra cache memory through 3D V-cache technology can significantly impact gaming performance, as seen with the current Ryzen 7000 X3D chips.

The Ryzen 7800X3D is currently considered the “king of the hill” when it comes to gaming CPUs, outperforming its non-X3D counterparts by a significant margin. The additional cache memory provided by the X3D chips can result in performance improvements of up to 35% in some games, with an average boost of around 20%. This gaming advantage has proven to be more influential than the IPC gains from new architectures, as evidenced by previous CPU releases from AMD.

While details about the Ryzen 9000 series with 3D V-cache are scarce, there are expectations for even more cache memory and potentially thinner cache chips to improve thermals. This could lead to the new CPUs running at higher clock speeds without sacrificing performance.
