Last year, The Case of the Golden Idol was one of the most beloved detective games. It featured twelve murders, each presented as a freeze frame at the moment of death. The game was praised for its unique approach to puzzle-solving. Now, it has a new expansion called The Spider of Lanka, which offers three more murders to solve and serves as a prequel to the original game.

The expansion is set in the fictional Kingdom of Lanka in 1741. It involves characters that were introduced in the main game, including the villain, the Spider of Lanka. According to the Steam page, the Spider of Lanka is “puppeteering events to shape the future.” The new cases are expected to “demand the utmost of your deduction powers to unravel.”

Like the original game, The Spider of Lanka requires players to solve each murder by finding clues and filling in the blanks in the chain of events. The game does not rely on magic watches or other supernatural elements. Instead, players take on the role of an omniscient detective who can poke around in scenes, rifling through pockets and bins to find items and absorb visual clues.

The unique puzzle-solving method of the game is reminiscent of the recent hit game, Return of the Obra Dinn. However, there is only one right answer to each mystery, meaning players must use their deduction skills to solve the puzzles.

The expansion costs £4.49 and requires the base game to play. Given that the base game won the Excellence in Design award at the IGFs, players are encouraged to purchase it if they have not already done so.

In conclusion, The Spider of Lanka is an exciting new expansion that offers players three more murders to solve in the unique and captivating world of The Case of the Golden Idol. It is a must-play for fans of detective games and those who enjoy using their deduction skills to solve intricate puzzles.
