Following the underwhelming reception of Wonder Woman 1984, fans were eagerly anticipating the third installment with Patty Jenkins at the helm and Gal Gadot reprising her role. However, the announcement of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-CEOs of DC Studios in December 2022 changed everything. The new leadership wasted no time in declaring a complete cinematic reboot of the DC Universe, leaving the fate of Wonder Woman 3 hanging in the balance. In a recent interview on Max’s Talking Pictures Podcast, Jenkins raised doubts about the future of Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe. When asked about the status of Wonder Woman 3, she candidly responded, “Yeah, for the time being, but probably easily forever.” Furthermore, Jenkins mentioned that there is no interest from other directors in taking over the Wonder Woman franchise at this time.

Even Chris Pine, who played a significant role in Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, shared his thoughts on the cancelled sequel. Regardless of the uncertainties surrounding Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins acknowledged the challenges faced by Gunn and Safran in revitalizing the DC superhero movies. She expressed her understanding of the daunting task ahead for the new leadership, stating, “It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they’re planning on doing and why… I have sympathy for what a big job it is.”

In addition to her involvement in the Wonder Woman franchise, Jenkins revealed that she is still dedicated to working on her Star Wars project, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, for Lucasfilm. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Wonder Woman 3, she emphasized her commitment to finishing her obligations to Lucasfilm after the scheduling conflicts arose. Jenkins explained, “When Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars. So we will see what happens there. Who knows?… They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron. We’ll see what happens.”

Ultimately, the ambiguous future of Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins reflects the ever-changing landscape of the entertainment industry. While fans may be disappointed by the uncertainties surrounding Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins’ commitment to her projects and her understanding of the challenges faced by the new leadership demonstrate her resilience and dedication to her craft. Only time will tell what the future holds for Wonder Woman and the talented individuals involved in bringing her story to life on the big screen.
