Recently, a new mod for Dragon’s Dogma 2 has surfaced, allowing players to experience path tracing in Capcom’s popular action-RPG. This mod was able to unearth an unfinished path trace rendering feature hidden within the game files, unlocking its potential for an enhanced visual experience.

With the path tracing mod activated, players can witness a significant improvement in the game’s lighting system. Buildings, characters, and even armor receive a boost in detail, making them appear more realistic and visually stunning. The shadows cast in the game also benefit from the mod, creating a more immersive and atmospheric environment for players to explore.

While the path tracing mod brings remarkable visual enhancements, it does come with its fair share of issues. One prominent challenge highlighted by tech experts at Digital Foundry is the phenomenon of objects appearing to float in mid-air due to the indirect path tracing lighting. This can detract from the overall realism of the game and disrupt the player’s immersion in the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Another drawback of the path tracing mod is its significant impact on frame rates. While a high-end graphics card like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 can typically run Dragon’s Dogma 2 at 105 frames per second, the introduction of the mod can reduce this number to as low as 42FPS. In extreme cases, players may be forced to play the game at a mere 20FPS if they opt for the full version of the mod, sacrificing smooth gameplay for enhanced visuals.

The path tracing mod for Dragon’s Dogma 2 represents a remarkable feat in the modding community, offering players a chance to witness the game in a new light. While the visual upgrades are undeniably impressive, the technical challenges and performance issues associated with the mod may deter some players from fully embracing its potential. Nonetheless, the modding scene continues to push boundaries and innovate within the gaming industry, providing endless possibilities for enhancing our favorite titles with cutting-edge technology.
