Escape From Tarkov players were recently thrown into a state of turmoil with the release of a new $250 Unheard edition of the game. The studio head of Battlestate Games, the developer behind the game, addressed the concerns raised by players in a Reddit post. The main point of contention was the new co-op PvE mode being locked behind the Unheard edition paywall, leading to frustration among players who had previously purchased the $150 Edge Of Darkness edition.

The studio head defended their decision by stating that the new co-op PvE mode was not considered DLC. According to Battlestate Games, DLC is classified as major additions to the game that are released post-launch, offering new functionality and content. The PvE mode, in their view, did not fall under this category. This distinction was crucial in justifying why Edge Of Darkness edition owners were not granted access to the new mode.

Another reason cited by the studio head for the lack of access to the PvE mode for Edge Of Darkness owners was the current server infrastructure. Battlestate Games claimed that their servers could not handle the influx of players accessing the new mode simultaneously. This limitation was a key factor in their decision to restrict access to the mode until the game’s release, when server capacity would be increased to accommodate all players.

Acknowledging the dissatisfaction among players, the studio head announced that the PvE mode would eventually be available for free to all Edge Of Darkness edition owners once the game is officially released. In the meantime, players had the option to purchase the Unheard edition or upgrade to it at a 50% discount to gain immediate access to the mode. This compromise was aimed at appeasing players who were unhappy with the current situation.

The response from Reddit users regarding Battlestate Games’ decision was overwhelmingly negative. Many players expressed their frustration and disappointment with the developer’s handling of the situation. The lack of transparency and the perceived bait-and-switch tactic with the Edge Of Darkness edition caused a significant backlash within the community. Players felt betrayed and misled by the promises made regarding future DLC access.

The controversy surrounding the release of Escape From Tarkov’s Unheard edition highlights the importance of transparent communication between developers and players. The decision to lock the new PvE mode behind a paywall has sparked outrage among the community, leading to widespread discontent. Battlestate Games’ attempt to justify their actions based on their interpretation of DLC and server limitations did little to assuage player concerns. Moving forward, it is crucial for developers to prioritize player feedback and ensure that decisions are made with the community’s best interests in mind. Only time will tell if Battlestate Games can regain the trust of their player base in light of this debacle.
