The global PC industry experienced a decline in shipments for the majority of 2023; however, there are signs of recovery, particularly in the GPU market. Recent statistics indicate that Intel is leading the comeback in the desktop and notebook market, demonstrating a significant lead over its competitors in the CPU sector.
According to Canalys, a global technology market analyst firm, Intel shipped a remarkable 50 million CPUs in the last quarter of 2023, maintaining a market share of 78% with a 3% year-on-year growth. In comparison, AMD shipped eight million units with a market share of 13%, showing a slight decline in shipments. Apple reported six million shipments with a 4% decrease, highlighting Intel’s significant lead in the CPU market.
The PC notebook sector is credited with leading the increase in both GPU and CPU segments. While gaming laptops may contribute to this growth, overall laptop and notebook sales account for nearly 69% of the global CPU market. Team blue, referring to Intel, appears to dominate the x86 CPU segment, maintaining a firm grip on the market.
Although Intel currently holds a commanding position in the CPU market, AMD has been making gains in overall market share. With the upcoming release of new contenders in the desktop CPU market, such as the “Granite Ridge” Zen 5 architecture chips, AMD poses a potential threat to Intel’s dominance. Rumors suggest that AMD’s “Strix Point” Zen 5 mobile chips will also be introduced later this year, increasing competition in the laptop CPU market.

While Intel has not revealed specific details about its next-generation Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, there are expectations for new releases to compete with AMD’s offerings. Speculation surrounds the launch of Intel’s new silicon, potentially at an upcoming event like Computex in June. As the industry evolves, it remains uncertain whether Intel will maintain its dominance or if AMD will continue to narrow the gap in market share.
