Google Meet has recently announced the introduction of filters that users can apply to lightly touch up their appearance during video calls. This feature, initially launched on mobile devices last year, is now available on Google Meet’s web app as well. Users will have the option to choose between two filters: subtle and smoothing.
The subtle filter is said to apply very light complexion smoothing, under-eye lightening, and eye whitening, while the smoothing filter enhances these effects slightly. Unlike some filters on platforms like Snapchat, Google’s filters seem to apply much lighter effects that are designed to make the user look more refreshed and natural, rather than drastically altering their appearance.
To access the touch-up options, users can select the Apply visual effects setting in Google Meet and choose the Appearance tab. From there, they can toggle Portrait touch-up on or off and choose their preferred filter. This feature is being rolled out to paid users on specific plans, including Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, and more. Google One and Google Workspace Individual subscribers will also have access to portrait touch-ups.
Google was relatively late to the game in offering video call filters, as platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams had already implemented similar features that allow users to alter their appearance more drastically. However, Google’s approach seems to focus on providing subtle enhancements that make users look more polished without appearing artificial.
Overall, Google Meet’s new filters for video calls offer users a convenient way to touch up their appearance before entering a meeting. With the option to choose between subtle and smoothing effects, users can customize their look based on their preferences. While competitors may offer more extreme filter options, Google’s approach prioritizes a more natural and understated enhancement of the user’s appearance.
