KeeperRL, a dungeon simulator with roguelike and RPG elements, first appeared on the scene back in 2014 with a series of alpha releases and a successful IndieGogo funding campaign. Originally scheduled to be completed that same year, the game took a different turn when it went through the player-voted Steam Greenlight process. The developer decided to extend the development process, and ten years later, KeeperRL has finally reached version 1.0.

Drawing inspiration from games like Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress, KeeperRL puts players in the shoes of an evil wizard tasked with managing a dungeon and its inhabitants. Players must dig deeper underground, set traps, and prepare for attacks from enemies. The game also allows players to explore the world outside their dungeon, raiding villages and settlements, or even switch roles and become an adventurer invading other player’s dungeons. With turn-based tactical combat, KeeperRL offers a variety of gameplay options for players to explore and enjoy.

Unlike its predecessors, KeeperRL prides itself on its detailed simulation mechanics. From granular wounding to spreading fires, the game offers a rich variety of items, spells, attributes, and special attacks. While it may not delve into the inner lives of its minions like Dwarf Fortress, KeeperRL focuses on creating an immersive and engaging gameplay experience for players.

Despite reaching version 1.0, KeeperRL is far from finished. The developer has announced plans for balance patches, fixes, and an upcoming 1.1 update that will introduce more content and gameplay features. This update will include another playable keeper faction, adding even more depth and variety to the game. For fans of Dungeon Keeper and similar games, KeeperRL offers a fresh and exciting take on the genre.

With an open-source remake of Dungeon Keeper, KeeperFx, also reaching version 1.0 after 15 years of development, now is an excellent time to be a fan of dungeon management games. KeeperRL is available for purchase for £11.61/$15/€12.59, offering players hours of strategic gameplay and immersive storytelling. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the genre or new to dungeon simulators, KeeperRL presents a unique and engaging experience for all types of players.
