A scam tweet posted on ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski’s account targeted NBA Top Shot users on a Saturday evening. The tweet falsely claimed that a “free NFT pack is available to all customers” on the platform, despite the fact that NBA Top Shot’s activity levels have significantly decreased since its peak.

The scam tweet directed users to a fraudulent version of the NBA Top Shot website with a .org address, as opposed to the official .com URL. This fake website aimed to steal assets from unsuspecting users who provided access to their crypto wallets. Despite the misleading tweet, the official NBA Top Shot account quickly clarified that there was no free airdrop happening at that time and urged users to verify all links before clicking.

Adrian Wojnarowski’s account, known for breaking news updates, had the scam tweet live for nearly an hour before it was removed. NBA fans who follow Wojnarowski for news alerts may have been at risk of having their account information compromised if they clicked on the fraudulent link. While Wojnarowski’s Twitter account was compromised, his syndicated Threads account was not utilized for the scam.

Recent statistics from tracking site Cryptoslam.io reveal a significant decrease in NBA Top Shot users. In January, there were only about 8,100 unique sellers and 5,550 unique buyers, a stark contrast to the peak of over 399,000 buyers in March 2021. With such a decline in user activity, it is unlikely that a large number of individuals are still actively using the platform and falling victim to scams like the one perpetrated through the scam tweet.

The online scam targeting NBA Top Shot users highlights the importance of being vigilant and verifying information before clicking on any links. As fraudulent activities continue to target individuals on social media platforms, it is crucial for users to exercise caution and skepticism to protect their personal information and assets.
