Sony’s latest addition to the superhero genre, Madame Web, has recently hit theaters and is already available for preorders in various formats online. While fans may be excited to secure their copy of the film, early reviews and ratings suggest that Madame Web may not live up to its potential as a standout superhero movie.

One of the preorder options for Madame Web is the steelbook edition, which includes the movie on 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and digital download. The steelbook case is said to feature unique cover art, creating anticipation among collectors. However, at a price of $35 at Walmart or $56 at Amazon, the steelbook edition may not be worth the investment, especially considering that Amazon’s price is expected to drop significantly before the official release.

Aside from the 4K steelbook edition, fans can also preorder Madame Web on standard Blu-ray and DVD from Amazon. It is worth noting that the current price for the 4K steelbook edition is the same as the DVD and lower than the standard Blu-ray. This pricing strategy may entice fans to opt for the higher-quality format, further reflecting the lack of confidence in the film’s potential success.

Madame Web tells the origin story of the eponymous superheroine, Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers her clairvoyant abilities. Unlike traditional superheroes, Cassandra does not possess super strength or acrobatic skills. Instead, she relies on her ability to see the future of other superheroes in her universe to confront the masked villain. This unique twist on the superhero narrative sets Madame Web apart and gives it a distinct slasher horror feel rather than the typical action-packed superhero film we have become accustomed to.

Unlike other Sony-produced superhero films such as those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Madame Web takes place in an alternate reality separate from Disney’s Marvel franchise. It exists in the same universe as Sony’s Venom films and the upcoming Kraven movie. This deviation from the established MCU may appeal to fans looking for a fresh take on the superhero genre. However, it also limits the potential for crossovers and interactions with beloved Marvel characters.

Unfortunately, Madame Web has not received a warm reception from critics or viewers. On Metacritic, a popular review aggregation platform, the film currently holds a “generally unfavorable” rating among critics. Additionally, the user score average stands at a mere 1.9 out of 10. While GameSpot’s reviewer was somewhat more positive, giving the film a 6/10 rating and describing it as “delightfully subversive,” it is evident that Madame Web has not resonated with the majority of audiences.

Sony’s Madame Web appears to be a misstep in the superhero genre. Despite offering preorder options in various formats, including the enticing steelbook edition, the film’s unique take on the superhero narrative and separation from the MCU have not been enough to win over critics and viewers. While it is always subjective, the overall reception of Madame Web suggests that it may not live up to the expectations of fans seeking an impactful superhero experience.
