Godzilla and Kong, the iconic figures in the Kaiju universe, have come a long way in their tumultuous relationship. While their initial encounter in Godzilla Vs. Kong was filled with animosity, they eventually put aside their differences and formed an unlikely alliance to defeat their common enemy, Mecha-Godzilla. Now, in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, these colossal titans have reached a new status quo where they have established a truce.

Director Adam Wingard draws inspiration from the legendary buddy-cop partnerships of the ’80s and ’90s, particularly the iconic Lethal Weapon series starring Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. Wingard revealed that the idea of a truce between Godzilla and Kong was heavily influenced by the dynamic between the two Lethal Weapon protagonists. While we may not hear Godzilla uttering lines about being too old for this chaos, the essence of their partnership can be felt in New Empire’s storyline.

“There’s a bit of a truce–Godzilla’s in control of the surface world, and Kong is down in Hollow Earth,” explained Wingard in an interview with Empire. This unique arrangement highlights the evolution of their relationship beyond a simple team-up in times of crisis. It is a testament to the deeper bond they have forged over time. Wingard further emphasized his affinity for the ’80s era, which served as the perfect backdrop for this storyline.

With the truce established, a new threat emerges in the form of Skar King, the simian villain set to challenge Godzilla and Kong’s newfound alliance. However, their teamwork may not be seamless at first. Wingard points out the language barrier between the monsters as a significant obstacle. The way they communicate is far from straightforward, resulting in a slew of misunderstandings. This adds an intriguing layer of complexity to their already delicate partnership, testing their ability to work together effectively.

As the film progresses, both Godzilla and Kong undergo significant transformations in preparation for their monumental battle. Wingard tantalizingly hints at Godzilla’s new and pinker power-up, describing it as “his version of a training routine.” This intriguing enhancement draws inspiration from the classic Shaw Brothers martial arts movies, further blending the realms of Kaiju and martial arts cinema. Audiences can anticipate witnessing a variety of different versions of Godzilla within the film, each bringing something unique to the epic showdown.
