As I revisited its Kickstarter page, I was astounded to learn that I was not alone in my excitement for Tales of Seikyu. Since my last article, Tales of Seikyu has become one of the most popular game projects on the crowdfunding platform, securing an impressive $185,343 in funding as of now. To put this achievement into perspective, it has surpassed its initial funding goal of $40,000 by nearly fivefold. The game’s ambitious stretch goals extend all the way up to $1.3 million, with multiplayer functionality being the primary target. However, the project is currently on the verge of reaching its next milestone of $200,000, which will enable the addition of console support, including the highly-regarded Nintendo Switch.
In case you missed my previous article, Tales of Seikyu presents a truly distinctive and visually appealing fantasy life-sim RPG experience. Its gameplay enables players to engage in a wide range of activities, including farming, fishing, furniture crafting, socializing with neighbors, and even finding a potential romantic partner. This game even provides players with the chance to explore the enchanting open world surrounding the town, where they will encounter mind-bending “Scenic Puzzles” – intriguing environmental puzzles that, when solved, reward players with valuable incentives for their town.
However, what truly captured my attention and fascination were the game’s rich ties to Japanese folklore. Tales of Seikyu seamlessly integrates the supernatural realm, featuring an abundant presence of yokai – ghosts, shapeshifters, and a diverse array of captivating supernatural creatures from Japanese mythology. Seikyu Island itself appears to be populated entirely by yokai, some of whom might even masquerade as ordinary individuals. “Build friendships, form families with the residents of the Yōkai town, support town development, and become a proud member of the flourishing mountainous Seikyu Island,” proclaims ACE Entertainment, the game’s developer. The ability to shapeshift into yokai grants players access to new powers and transformative experiences. Imagine cultivating the land as a mighty boar, soaring through the celestial skies as a crow tengu, or exploring the depths of the sea as a water slime in search of sunken treasures.
