Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is getting a new expansion pack called Return of Rome. The new pack takes players back to the very first Age of Empires game by bringing back The Roman Empire and all the other civilizations from the original game. The expansion pack also includes a new civilization, the Lac Viet, which was added due to its popularity in Vietnam.

The Return of Rome expansion pack isn’t fully integrated into Age of Empires 2 proper, but it does allow players to lead the Romans against the Aztecs and other Age of Empires 2 civilizations. The expansion pack includes three new campaigns focused on the Sumerians, the Macedonians, and the Romans. In addition, there’s a new game mode called D3, which was designed to reduce rush tactics and is now being officially supported.

The expansion pack is somewhat self-contained, and players can challenge their friends with the original factions. Balancing 17 playable factions and integrating them into AOE 2 would have been too complex, according to the developers.

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition was called the greatest RTS of all time in our review, and the new edition retains that quality. The game has been going strong for over 20 years, with a console port, new expansions, and now a pseudo-port of the original game.

The Return of Rome expansion pack will be available on Steam for £10/$15/€15 on May 16th. Players can pre-order the expansion now to get a 15% discount. With its new content, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition offers players a chance to relive the experience of battling and conquering like it’s 1998 again.
