If you’ve been eagerly awaiting the possibility of playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC Game Pass, unfortunately, it seems that the chances of that happening are extremely slim. Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, recently spoke to IGN and stated that the studio has always been against the idea of their massive CRPG being included in Microsoft’s subscription service. Vincke’s reasoning behind this decision is quite reasonable – the sheer scale and scope of Baldur’s Gate 3, which can take players dozens of hours to complete, justifies asking players to pay for the game in order to recoup development costs. Vincke emphasizes that the game does not include any additional microtransactions and provides players with a substantial gaming experience right from the start.
Earlier this year, leaked documents from the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard merger revealed that Microsoft estimated it would cost $5 million to secure Baldur’s Gate 3 for Game Pass. Looking at the immense popularity and critical acclaim the game has garnered, this price seems like an absolute steal compared to the prices suggested for other titles like Gotham Knights ($50 million), Mortal Kombat 1 ($250 million), and Jedi: Survivor ($300 million). It is worth noting that Microsoft appeared to have a somewhat dismissive attitude towards Baldur’s Gate 3, categorizing it as a “second-run Stadia PC RPG.” Nevertheless, even Larian admits that they were uncertain about the potential success of the game, given the niche nature of the CRPG genre. However, the game’s success has proven to be overwhelming for the studio.
Frightening Success
The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has admittedly frightened Larian Studios, but in a good way. Swen Vincke confessed last month that the game’s achievements have surprised and pleased the team. The game has received widespread critical acclaim, demonstrating that players find it worthwhile to pay upfront for a content-rich experience rather than relying on microtransactions or additional purchases.
While Baldur’s Gate 3 may not be coming to PC Game Pass, its success undoubtedly opens doors for future developments. Larian Studios now has the resources and confidence to continue creating other games, building upon the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a testament to the value and viability of producing high-quality games without resorting to the often-criticized model of monetization through microtransactions or constant expansions and DLCs.
It appears that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not be making its way onto PC Game Pass. However, the reasoning behind this decision is understandable, as the game offers a substantial and complete experience upfront without any additional costs. The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has proven that players are willing to pay for a well-crafted game that delivers an immersive and content-rich adventure. Larian Studios can now forge ahead, armed with the knowledge that their approach resonates with gamers and secures their future as a prominent game developer.
