“The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” takes us back to the time before Katniss Everdeen’s Hunger Games, when the future President Snow mentored a contestant. In the first trailer released on Thursday evening, we see a significant departure from the retro-futuristic look of the original four films. The art style of the movie has a fascinating early-to-mid 20th Century aesthetic that envelops everything.
The Major Players
The trailer introduces all the major players in the film, including Snow himself, played by Tom Blyth, and his mentee Lucy, played by Rachel Zegler. We also meet Peter Dinklage’s Casca Highbottom, the game’s creator, and the intense Dr. Gaul, played by Viola Davis. We even get to see Lucky Flickerman, played by Jason Schwartzman, who is presumably related to Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickerman from the previous movies.
A Smaller Arena
The trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot, but the new aesthetic results in some pretty cool imagery. The Hunger Games take place in a smaller arena, which is a stark contrast to the lush jungle of the previous films. Directed by Francis Lawrence, who has directed all the other Hunger Games movies except the first, “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” hits theaters on November 17.
