Improving Contrast in IPS Panels: Dell’s New IPS Black Monitors

IPS screen technology has long been criticized for its lack of contrast compared to VA panels. VA panels typically offer two to four times the contrast of IPS alternatives. However, LG has recently introduced its IPS Black technology, which promises double the contrast of regular IPS panels. While IPS Black monitors have so far been limited to 60Hz models aimed at corporate use, Dell has now released a pair of new IPS Black monitors that operate at 120Hz. This opens up the possibility of IPS gaming panels with improved contrast.

The Dell U2724D and U2724DE are 27-inch 1440p panels that utilize IPS Black technology, increasing the contrast to 2,000:1 compared to the usual 1,000:1 of IPS panels (although some claim 1,300:1). While VA panels can achieve contrast ratios of up to 4,000:1 (with even the worst-performing examples reaching 2,500:1), the new Dell monitors certainly offer a significant improvement. The brightness of these monitors is rated at 350 nits, and they provide 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. With a claimed response time of 5ms, it is evident that these monitors are not explicitly designed for gaming. The U2724DE model, however, includes additional features such as Thunderbolt 3 downstream, 1x RJ45 Ethernet connection, and a KVM function.

One might argue that IPS panel contrast is irrelevant in a world of full-array dimming, a feature offered by many of the best gaming monitors. By decreasing the backlight, it is possible to address the problem of light leakage through the IPS panel. However, even the most advanced desktop dimming implementations can be cumbersome. This is where inherent contrast improvement becomes crucial, as it avoids complicated algorithms and the low resolution of full-array backlights. Unfortunately, IPS Black technology, as seen in earlier iterations, has not been particularly impressive in terms of contrast improvement. Previous reviews of Dell’s IPS Black monitors suggested that the subjective improvement in contrast, black levels, and vibrancy was minimal, if any.

While the previous IPS Black monitor from Dell failed to deliver substantial contrast improvement, the newer 27-inch version holds promise. There are hopes that Dell has made significant enhancements to the technology, making it more suitable for gaming monitors. The new monitors demonstrate Dell’s commitment to providing better displays and addressing the shortcomings of IPS panels. Whether or not these improvements translate into a noticeable difference in gaming performance remains to be seen.

The Dell U2724D and U2724DE monitors will be available for purchase starting from November 9. The U2724D is priced at $480, while the U2724DE, which includes additional features, comes at a higher price point of $650. These monitors offer an intriguing option for those in need of high-quality displays with improved contrast, although their suitability for gaming purposes is yet to be fully assessed.
