Revenant Hill, the highly anticipated follow-up to the indie hit Night in the Woods, has officially been canceled. The decision was made by the development studio, The Glory Society, after key members of the team were forced to step away from the project due to “recent serious health issues.” This abrupt cancellation has left fans and the gaming community shocked and disappointed.

The road to creating a complex game is never easy. It requires time, effort, and a dedicated team working harmoniously. The Glory Society acknowledged this in their announcement, stating, “Games take a while to make and usually require a good team working together. We’ve been lucky to have one such good team.” Unfortunately, the recent health issues faced by two crucial members of the team rendered them unable to continue their work on Revenant Hill. This loss of talent has created a significant void within the small development team.

An Unfortunate Hiatus

Given the reality of schedules, budgets, and the challenging task of reworking the entire project within these constraints, the team has come to the mutual decision to suspend operations indefinitely. This decision effectively marks the end of the development of Revenant Hill. The Glory Society finds themselves in a difficult position as they navigate the aftermath of this unforeseen turn of events.

One of the affected team members, artist and animator Scott Benson, shared his personal experience in a separate post. He revealed, “Over the past 12 months or so, I got very sick and it didn’t go away. Eventually, I was diagnosed with severe heart failure, most likely from a virus. It will continue to greatly limit me for the foreseeable future, and as such, I’ve had to stop working in the manner I once did.” Benson’s health struggles serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by individuals behind the scenes in the gaming industry.

Based on the wording on The Glory Society’s website, it appears that the entire studio will be on hiatus as well. A line at the top of their page reads, “The Glory Society was a worker cooperative that worked on a game called Revenant Hill.” This leaves uncertainty regarding the future of The Glory Society and their ability to regroup and continue creating innovative and artistic gaming experiences.

Revenant Hill was first announced in May during a PlayStation Showcase event, generating significant excitement within the gaming community. Although not a direct sequel, the game promised to exist within the same universe as Night in the Woods, boasting a similar tone and art style. However, with the cancellation, fans will never have the opportunity to explore this captivating world and its intriguing narrative.

The cancellation of Revenant Hill is a tremendous loss for both the developers at The Glory Society and the gaming community as a whole. The unexpected health issues faced by key team members have upended the project, forcing the team to suspend operations indefinitely. This unfortunate turn of events serves as a harsh reminder of the personal challenges faced by those in the gaming industry and the fragile nature of creative endeavors. As fans mourn the loss of an eagerly awaited game, they can only hope that The Glory Society and its team members find the strength and resources to overcome this setback and continue pursuing their passion for creating memorable gaming experiences.
