Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has announced that it is expanding and updating its child safety features in response to growing concerns about the platforms recommending inappropriate and sexual content involving children. Despite recent reports highlighting the issue, Meta is determined to improve the safety of its platforms and protect young users.

The Wall Street Journal has extensively covered how Instagram and Facebook have been serving up content that sexualizes children. The reports highlighted how Instagram facilitates a network of accounts involved in the buying and selling of child sexual abuse material, using recommendations algorithms to connect them. Furthermore, investigations revealed that Facebook Groups also harbor pedophile accounts and groups, some of which have amassed up to 800,000 members. These alarming findings have shed light on how Meta’s recommendation system has enabled abusive accounts to find each other.

In response to these revelations, Meta has pledged to introduce several measures to address child safety concerns. They will implement limits on suspicious adult accounts’ interactions, preventing them from following one another, receiving recommendations, and making their comments invisible to other suspicious accounts. Additionally, Meta has expanded its list of terms, phrases, and emojis related to child safety and started using machine learning to detect connections between different search terms.

Both US and EU regulators have been pressuring Meta to improve the safety of its platforms for children. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other tech executives are scheduled to testify before the Senate in January 2024 on the issue of online child exploitation. In November, EU regulators issued a deadline to Meta to provide information on how it protects minors. Today, a new request was sent specifically addressing the circulation of self-generated child sexual abuse material (SG-CSAM) on Instagram and the platform’s recommendation system. The regulatory scrutiny underscores the urgency for Meta to take concrete actions to safeguard young users.

The Journal’s reporting on the concerning content served on Instagram has prompted dating app companies, such as Bumble and Match, to suspend advertising on the platform. These companies took action after finding their ads displayed next to explicit content and Reels videos that sexualized children. The accountability that advertisers hold platforms like Instagram to is crucial in fostering a safer online environment for users of all ages.

Meta’s commitment to expanding and improving its child safety features is a step in the right direction. However, it is evident that more needs to be done to address the underlying issues causing the circulation of inappropriate content involving children on Instagram and Facebook. With increasing regulatory scrutiny and advertisers demanding better safeguards, Meta must prioritize the safety and well-being of its young users.
