As I sit engrossed in the virtual streets of Los Santos and Blaine County, my girlfriend remarks incredulously, “Is that GTA Online still?” It’s a valid question considering the countless hours I’ve spent immersed in this crime-filled world. But this time, she’s taken aback by the appearance of Dr. Dre and other famous figures in the game. Intrigued by her curiosity, I can’t help but ponder how far GTA Online has come since its launch in 2013.
GTA Online is no longer just a game; it has become a cultural phenomenon. Its massive success has elevated it to the ranks of the highest-selling entertainment products of all time. Displayed on advertisement screens in Times Square, it attracts players from all walks of life. With a library of chart-topping music, real-world DJs in virtual nightclubs, and a wide array of vehicles, from supercars to flying DeLoreans, GTA Online has created a dynamic and immersive experience for its players.
GTA Online may not be perfect, but then again, no game is without its flaws. In its ten-year journey, certain mechanics have shown their age. Its controls can sometimes feel clunky compared to its contemporaries, and load times on PC still leave something to be desired. The cover system can be as unpredictable as a wayward shopping cart in an old supermarket. Additionally, the game’s microtransaction system, known as Shark Cards, has faced criticism for allowing players to gain advantages by purchasing in-game cash.
Hacking is another issue that plagues the PC version, where griefers can quickly ruin entire sessions. Even on the recently released PS5, the presence of disruptive trolls is a constant nuisance. However, despite these shortcomings, GTA Online remains one of my all-time favorite video games.
The recent iterations of GTA Online on the PS5 and Xbox Series X showcase the game’s stunning visuals and its ability to create chaos driven by the players themselves. The game offers an unparalleled variety of customization options, whether it’s clothing, properties, vehicles, or even submarines. Players can immerse themselves in a myriad of missions and jobs, both created by fellow players and designed by Rockstar. With the new Career Builder feature, you can establish a criminal empire through activities like stealing and selling goods, drug manufacturing and distribution, arms trafficking, or even managing nightclubs and motorcycle gangs. Racing enthusiasts can indulge in over 450 official races while exploring countless player-created tracks. The recently introduced Community Series shines a spotlight on player-made adversary modes, survivals, and missions.
Looking beyond the game’s structured activities, the performance culture within GTA Online is truly inspiring. The game’s Rockstar Editor powers the high-flying stunting community, where players like Ash Skyqueen showcase their skills. Furthermore, the captivating roleplaying scene, fueled by inventive players and modders, has rewritten the rulebook and added a new layer of depth to the game. Rockstar’s acquisition of FiveM, a popular multiplayer modification, promises an exciting future for the Grand Theft Auto series. The development of FiveM, evident from job postings on the official Rockstar careers website, indicates that roleplaying will likely continue to play a significant role in the upcoming GTA 6.
GTA Online has become a sprawling world of endless possibilities and a testament to Rockstar’s commitment to innovation. It has undergone a decade of evolution, constantly adapting to the changing landscape of online gaming. Its enduring success can be attributed to its ability to captivate players with a unique blend of immersive gameplay, a vibrant virtual world, and the freedom to shape their criminal empires.
As we look towards the future, it remains uncertain what GTA Online will become when the next installment of the mainline game arrives. However, one thing is clear: GTA Online has set the bar incredibly high for its successor. Rockstar faces the challenge of surpassing the expectations set by a game that has become a cornerstone of the gaming industry. But if there’s any developer up to that task, it’s undoubtedly Rockstar.
