Starfield is an RPG that puts a major emphasis on character customization. From appearance to morality to abilities, you have the freedom to shape your character as you see fit. As you progress in the game, you will earn skill points that can be invested in various skills to improve your character. However, with a staggering 82 skills and four ranks within each skill, it can be overwhelming to decide where to start. In this article, we will guide you through the skills that are universally useful, regardless of your character build.

While it may be tempting to rely solely on persuasion and diplomacy, combat is inevitable in Starfield. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a preferred weapon specialization early on and stick with it. Focusing on a specific type of weapon allows you to access higher-ranked perks faster, leading to a significant increase in combat effectiveness. For example, Rifle Certification is a safe bet if you’re unsure, as rifles offer a wide range of options from automatic assault weapons to long-range sniper rifles. Once you’ve maxed out a weapon specialization, consider investing in Ballistic Weapons, Laser Weapons, or Particle Weapons based on your strongest affinity.

2. Nutrition

Food and drink are abundant in Starfield, and you’ll inevitably collect a lot of them. However, consuming food alone doesn’t provide significant healing. To maximize the usefulness of these items, consider investing in Nutrition. This skill boosts the healing capabilities of food and drink by up to 50%, making them far more valuable. Additionally, Nutrition can enhance other effects, such as increased persuasion chances, damage resistance, and carry capacity. So, make sure to eat good food and reap the benefits.

As you explore the world of Starfield, you’ll come across countless locked doors and chests. Without investing in the Security skill, your ability to unlock novice-level locks is limited, and the rewards behind these barriers may not be worth the effort. By allocating at least one skill point to Security, you gain access to advanced-level locks and automatic pick placements. Even if you’re not planning on becoming a thief, improving your lockpicking abilities will greatly enhance the returns you get from using digipicks and solve puzzles more efficiently.

4. Weight Lifting

Given Starfield’s focus on crafting components and mineral resources, managing your character’s encumbrance becomes crucial, especially in the late game. While the cargo hold can help alleviate the weight burden, investing in Weight Lifting allows your character to carry more items, up to 100kg. Although not the most glamorous skill, it will save you from numerous headaches and enable you to collect valuable resources without being constantly weighed down.

Being a Bethesda game, Starfield incorporates spaceship piloting as a core gameplay element. While you can initially ignore this skill, tougher spaceship dogfights will eventually require you to have a high Piloting rank. This skill not only grants you temporary speed boosts and improved maneuverability but also unlocks access to higher-class ships. Ranks 3 and 4 enable you to pilot Class B and Class C ships, which are larger, faster, equipped with better weapons, and boast increased cargo space. By investing in Piloting, you’ll be prepared for all challenges that come your way and can upgrade to the best ships without hesitation.

While there are numerous skills to choose from in Starfield, it’s essential to prioritize the ones that offer universal benefits. Building a solid foundation with skills like weapon specialization, nutrition, security, weight lifting, and piloting will set you on the path to success in the game. So, make wise skill point investments and watch your character thrive in the vast universe of Starfield.
