LG recently unveiled its latest innovation, the StandbyME Go, a 27-inch suitcase TV priced at a staggering $999.99. This peculiar device, showcased at the IFA 2023 in Berlin, promises a unique portable entertainment experience on the go. However, upon examining the demo model, it quickly became apparent that the StandbyME Go falls short in terms of functionality and value.
One of the standout features of the StandbyME Go is its robust articulating design. The TV can be seamlessly transitioned from portrait to landscape mode and can be adjusted to any desired angle. The stand mechanism feels sturdy, but it requires the use of both hands to maneuver. While the ergonomic design is commendable, it does little to compensate for the lack of practical features in this device.
Despite claims of optimized touchscreen gaming, the demo model at IFA 2023 failed to showcase any of the advertised games. Perhaps this was an oversight or a limitation of the demo unit, but it raises concerns about the device’s gaming capabilities. Furthermore, the StandbyME Go offers limited connectivity options, with just a single HDMI port and USB input available. Although it includes a built-in battery with an advertised three-hour lifespan, the device’s overall functionality seems quite limited.
Another disappointment with the StandbyME Go is its 1080p LCD display. In comparison to LG’s impressive 4K OLED panels, the image quality appears unremarkable. Considering the steep price tag, it is expected that the StandbyME Go would offer a more visually engaging viewing experience. Unfortunately, this is not the case, making it difficult to justify the exorbitant cost for a subpar display.
Despite its shortcomings, the StandbyME Go is currently available for preorder on LG’s US site. However, potential customers may hesitate to make a purchase, given the device’s limited features and underwhelming display. The estimated ship date of October 16th adds further uncertainty to the value proposition of this product.
